- Abstract : From the time of its incorporation in 1892, Sudbury, located at the junction of Nolins and Junction Creeks, was subject to the fortunes of life on the waterfront. These small creeks could not be ignored by the rapidly growing city. The purpose of the study was to determine the many challenges posed by the creeks over the seasons, based on citizen complaints and municipal responses reported in City Council minutes and Sudbury's main daily newspaper. The creeks were quickly associated with real‐life problems and their transformation was initiated at the end of the 19 th century. However, a dialogue was established between citizens and the City, with the participation of newspapers. This led to an understanding, through trial and error, of practical changes that would make it possible to live on the waterfront while reducing the negative impacts associated with it. A serious flood in 1937, however, led instead to the implementation of the Creek Improvement Plan. The creeks, which were severely degraded and had been assimilated into the urban infrastructure, were radically transformed until they were covered up in the downtown area. No longer part of the landscape, they are, however, a complex legacy to the next generation . … (more)
