- Abstract: Phytochemicals are a large group of natural compounds with medicinal properties for a broad range of diseases. Due to their rapid metabolism in the body, encapsulation with biocompatible and biodegradable materials to trap them and increasing their bioavailability is a critical approach. In this work, Spirulina platensis was used as a carrier to encapsulate black cumin extract and to enhance its bioavailability, stability and therapeutic properties. Physicochemical characterizations of the composite were performed using FTIR, TGA, UV–visible spectroscopy. Antioxidant activity, antibacterial, and cytotoxicity assessment on the composite were done as bioactivity assays. FTIR, spectroscopy, and TGA results confirmed the encapsulation of extract in microalga. A significant encapsulation efficiency (81.94%) was obtained. The thermal stability of extract in the composite increased by 6.02% compared to the free extract. The composite showed a strong antioxidant effect (~5 times the extract), and a significant lethal impact on MCF‐7 cancer cells (80%) with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 6.56 and 13.13 mg/ml against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The results show that the composite successfully provides a novel system with effective integration of dietary and medicinal impacts and introduces a new nutrient with significant therapeutic specifications for cancer treatment.
