Abstract

Highlights: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is highly efficient for pathogen surveillance. WGS has been applied and validated in the surveillance of Campylobacter . Existing challenges hinder the implementation of WGS in pathogen surveillance. Many foodborne pathogen surveillance programs are initiating the transition to WGS. Abstract : Campylobacter is one of the world's leading causes of bacterial gastroenteritis, raising global attention for surveillance and control. The popularization in next-generation sequencing technologies has allowed researchers to develop and implement whole genome sequencing in the monitoring and detection of foodborne pathogens. Campylobacter food chain surveillance has entered the era of whole genome sequencing, as it has been validated to be a robust, accurate and efficient tool for the surveillance of this microbe.
