- Abstract: Polyamines, such as putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd), are positively implicated in plant growth and differentiation as well as in environmental stress responses. In present study, the exogenous applications of 1 mmol/L Put, 1 mmol/L Spd, and 0.5 mmol/L Put + 0.5 mmol/L Spd contributed to the alleviation of chilling injury (CI) development and the quality maintenance of Zizyphus jujuba Mill fruit during storage at −2 ± 0.5°C. Results demonstrated that exogenous Put or Spd treatment significantly alleviated the CI symptom of jujube such as spongy brown, mesophyll collapses, cell structure and cell integrity, suppressed the change in fruit color from green to red, maintained higher levels of total soluble solids and titratable acidity, decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation, compared to control. What's more, the relative antioxidant enzymes activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase were enhanced by Put and/or Spd treatment. Particularly, combination of Put and Spd effectively maintained the quality of the jujube fruits during storage by enhancing CI tolerance and decreasing MDA accumulation. This study elucidated the role of polyamines in regulating cold tolerance in postharvest jujube fruit and suggested that the synergic application of exogenous Put and Spd could be potentially alternative for alleviating CI as well as maintaining excellent quality of jujube fruits in response to chilling stress. Practical applications: The exogenous polyamines have potential application and developmental value prospects for the commercial storage of fruits sensitive to low temperature. … (more)
