Abstract

ABSTRACT: The successful treatment of a traumatized adolescent female can be related to the analyst's: 1) doing an extended evaluation and exploration to establish the beginning of a positive working alliance between all members of the family (2) having empathy for the parents and so avoiding destructive rivalry between therapist and parents (3) working with the transference of defense thus allowing for the emergence of post-infantile adolescent incestuous conflicts in all members of the family (4) restoring the realistic adult parental roles of mother and father (5) being committed to the importance of regular, concurrent parent work through all the phases of the adolescent's treatment (6) having the courage to set aside sadomasochistic omnipotent closed system modes of functioning in favor of open system realistic competence, power, love and creativity.
