- Abstract: A nutritional supplement FFD‐002 composed of micronutrients, macronutrients, and herbal actives was formulated with ingredients known for therapeutic effect in diabetes management. The study evaluated the effect of supplementing FFD‐002 on diabetes and related complications. Diabetes was induced in Wistar rats by administering a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ, 45 mg/Kg bodyweight, intraperitoneal) and rats were supplemented with either 2.5 g/kg or 5 g/kg of FFD‐002 (p.o [per oral] once daily) for 90 days. Supplementation of FFD‐002 to diabetic rats resulted in improved fasting glucose levels and marked decrease in diabetes‐induced nephropathy and retinopathy. Cell‐based experimental results indicated that FFD‐002 treatment increased fat oxidation in muscle cells and stimulated the secretion of GLP‐1 (Glucagon‐Like Peptide‐1) in intestinal cells. These studies showed that FFD‐002, formulated by combining modern nutritional concepts with phytomedicine, could be beneficial in the management of diabetes. Practical applications: Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease involving dysregulation at different physiological levels. Physical exercise and dietary control are proposed as key measures for maintaining as well as prevention of diabetes mellitus.
