Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">We here searched for HSP70-inducers from a library of herbal extracts that have already been approved as quasi-pharmaceutical products in Japan.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">We selected an ethanol extract of <italic>Arnica montana</italic> and purified an HSP70-inducer, AM-2 (helenalin 2-methylbutyrate).</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Pre-treatment of cells with AM-2 or <italic>Arnica montana</italic> extract decreased melanin production.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">These results suggest that AM-2 and <italic>Arnica montana</italic> extract could be beneficial for use in hypopigmenting cosmetics as a consequence of their stimulatory effects on HSP70 expression.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
