<abstract abstract-type="synopsis" xml:lang="en" id="embr201338126-abs-0002"> <title>Synopsis</title> <p> <boxed-text content-type="graphic" id="embr201338126-blkfxd-0001" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"> <graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pghjsq72n5" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /> </boxed-text> </p> <p>The <italic>LMNA</italic> gene encodes functionally distinct isoforms that have opposite effects on energy metabolism and lifespan. Mice expressing lamin C only are obese and have an extended lifespan, whereas mice expressing progerin are lean and die early.</p> <p> <list id="embr201338126-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Mice exclusively expressing the lamin C isoform exhibit decreased energy metabolism and mitochondrial activity.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Exclusive lamin C expression in mice results in an increased lifespan and weight gain.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Progerin‐expressing mice present a higher energy metabolism and are lipodystrophic.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Key modulators of energy expenditure are inversely regulated in lamin C‐ and progerin‐expressing mice.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
