<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en" id="bjd12444-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>What's already known about this topic?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd12444-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Fluorescence confocal mosaicing microscopy is an emerging technology for imaging of nuclear and morphological detail and assessing tumour margins directly in fresh Mohs excisions, without the need for frozen section processing.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Basal cell carcinoma margins have been detected with a sensitivity of 96·6% and a specificity of 89·2%.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> <p> <bold>What does this study add?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd12444-list-0002" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>A new and faster approach called strip mosaicing confocal microscopy has been developed, towards potentially routine implementation at the bedside.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Preliminary assessment demonstrates both sensitivity and specificity of 94% for detecting skin cancer margins.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
