- Abstract : The Origin of Carmen Power is a free online resource aimed at 7–13 year olds exploring the experience of having a brain tumour, as well as being a superhero adventure filled with monsters, magic powers and unicorns! We are guided through the show by Carmen, who, through a playful quest, shares her real-life experience of cancer five years ago to offer an insight into a child's response to cancer treatment and life beyond a diagnosis. The 25 minute show uses play and imagination to express the challenges she faced and overcame when diagnosed aged 7. Developed by Artistic Director Toby Peach of Beyond Arts and co-produced by Carmen herself, this piece aims to amplify the voices of young people who have experienced cancer. Beyond Arts create arts projects designed to make visible the invisible impacts of a diagnosis. Both the Arts and Play teams at GOSH were involved in supporting the development of this piece and helping GOSH patients access it. In this digital poster we will share how the piece evolved over several years and was adapted for the pandemic. We will explore the narrative of beyond treatment and how the arts can be used to support young people through their hospital experience. www. originofcarmenpower.co.uk … (more)
