- Highlights: Hydration and setting of cement paste with TEA are sensitive to the mixing speed. Setting time was first decreased and then increased with the increased mixing speed. Fast setting is caused by the starved supply of sulfate and the formation of AFm. Careful attention should be paid to the preparation of cement paste with TEA. Abstract: The presence of triethanolamine (TEA) extremely increases the sensitivity of hydration and setting performance of cement paste on mixing speed during sample preparation. The increased mixing speed first prolongs the induction period and then reduces it, but the corresponding setting time was first decreased and then increased. Besides, a greatly accelerated setting phenomenon was found for cement paste prepared at intermediate mixing speed with TEA dosage of 0.2 wt% and the further increased mixing speed can eliminate this abnormal setting performance, which could be caused by the first decreased and then increased dissolution rate of anhydrite along with the increased mixing speed.
