- Highlights: Comprehensively review the inspection and reinforcement design for tunnel quality defects. Focus on the formation causes of quality defects based on the hierarchical structure model. Determine the tunnel reinforcement designs with the FCE method. Summarize the process of health inspection and reinforcement design for defective tunnels. Abstract: Voids and insufficient lining thickness are typical tunnel quality defects, which can be regarded as typical incentives for tunnel diseases such as cracks, water leakage, and spalling, seriously threatening the durability and safety of lining structures. In this paper, the health inspection and reinforcement design for typical quality defects were systematically reviewed. Firstly, the inspection techniques of typical tunnel quality defects were reviewed. Subsequently, the formation causes of typical quality defects were reviewed and summarized based on the hierarchical structure model. Then, the research status of reinforcement techniques of tunnel structures with typical quality defects, especially the fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) methods, was reviewed. Further, the conceptual reinforcement schemes of the lining structures were provided based on the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method. Finally, the health inspection and reinforcement design of lining structures were systematically discussed. In general, this paper is expected to provide basic guidance for the prevention and reinforcement design of defective tunnels.
