Highlights: Permutation importance scores were used to interpret the results of Census outreach. "Direct engagement (1-on-1)" and "single events" have the highest impact. Outreach activities were found not as important as socio-demographic features. Careful data collection should be performed to ensure meaningful analysis. The results, methods, and findings are relevant for public campaigning efforts.
