Abstract

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) play an important role in bringing transformations in society. This exploratory study aims to examine the way NGOs are affecting women empowerment in India. A qualitative multiple case study approach was adopted. It was found that the NGOs are playing a catalytic role in women empowerment, particularly in rural areas. They are focusing on making women financially independent by facilitating them to adopt micro-entrepreneurship, leading to their financial independence. NGOs are also generating awareness for self-development among women and providing a boost to their self-esteem. Their efforts have resulted into their enhanced role in family decision making and in community. The NGOs are thus enabling economic and social empowerment of women. The study identifies the four-step process adopted by NGOs for women empowerment.
