Abstract

Abstract : This article re-examines the common understanding of heroism in Rachid Bouchareb's 2006 film Days of Glory ( Indigènes ). It challenges the premise that the four Maghrebian infantrymen at the centre of the picture are in fact fighting in the French ranks in order to primarily serve mainland France. Stylistic, rhetoric and filmic analyses of the film will show that, instead, enrolling in the French army provides the Arab soldiers with an opportunity to – paradoxically – assert their identity as free subjects. The result of this approach is twofold: while inscribing the protagonists of Days of Glory in the classical heroic tradition, where obedience and self-government are often complementary, it also expounds the director's militant desire to define the North African immigrant as both France's historical ally and an autonomous subject. Abstract : Cet article se propose de redéfinir la notion d'héroïsme dans le film Indigènes (2006) de Rachid Bouchareb. Il s'agit pour nous d'interroger la prémisse, admise généralement par la critique, selon laquelle les quatre tirailleurs maghrébins au centre du récit se battent dans les rangs de l'armée française avec pour principal objectif de rendre service à la métropole. En partant d'une analyse stylistique – aussi bien rhétorique que cinématographique –, nous montrerons que, en réalité, les soldats maghrébins profitent de leur service à la France pour, paradoxalement, affirmer leur condition de sujets libres. Cette approche, en nous permettant d'inscrire les personnages principaux d' Indigènes dans la tradition héroïque classique, où souvent l'obéissance et l'insoumission sont complémentaires, expose la volonté du réalisateur de faire un film militant qui caractérise l'immigrant nord-africain en même temps comme un allié historique de la France et comme un sujet autonome.
