- Abstract: To improve biological control and habitat management, how pest predators spread from natural habitats to crops must be understood. We studied whether intrinsic differences in stable‐isotopic ratios of C and N from an artificial C4 (sugar‐cane) or C3 (muti‐flower honey) diet could help mark and track predators that feed on them. Two aphid predators solely feeding on sugar resources as adults were used: the green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea s.l., and the parasitic wasp Aphidius colemani . δ 13 C and δ1 5 N values from wild individuals helped distinguish them from marked ones and determine the habitat resources they used. Green lacewings fed on C4 showed significantly higher δ 13 C values than those on C3 and wild individuals. However, parasitoid values were unaffected, with no mark acquired. Logistic regression was fitted to assess the probability of green lacewings having either diet with a probability of 0.93. Marks were acquired after 5 days and were detectable 20 days after switching diets with a probability of 0.67. Similar δ 15 N values for both wild populations indicated both predators had similar prey, but different vegetal resources (different δ 13 C values). Sugar‐cane honey is a natural and reliable marker for tracking lacewing populations in the field, but not for parasitoids. Resumen: Conocer cómo los enemigos naturales de plagas se mueven desde los hábitats naturales hasta los cultivos resulta fundamental para mejorar el control biológico y la gestión del hábitat. Estudiamos si las diferencias intrínsecas en las proporciones de isótopos estables de C y N de enemigos naturales que se alimentan en una dieta C4 (miel de caña de azúcar) o una dieta C3 (miel multifloral) se pueden utilizar como marcadores. Se utilizaron dos enemigos naturales de pulgones que se alimentan exclusivamente de fuentes de azúcar cuando son adultos: la crisopa Chrysoperla carnea s.l. y la avispa parásita Aphidius colemani . Los valores de δ 13 C y δ 15 N de individuos silvestres se utilizaron para distinguirlos de los marcados y para determinar los recursos que utilizan en el área de estudio. Las crisopas alimentadas con miel C4 mostraron valores de δ 13 C significativamente más altos que las alimentadas con miel C3 y los individuos silvestres. Sin embargo, los valores de parasitoides no se vieron afectados, y no adquirieron ninguna marca. Se ha ajustado una regresión logística para evaluar la probabilidad de que una crisopa tenga cualquiera de las dos dietas con una probabilidad de 0.93. Las crisopas adquirieron las marcas en tan sólo 5 días, y la marca fue detectable hasta 20 días después de un cambio de dieta con una probabilidad de 0.67. Los valores similares de δ 15 N obtenidos para ambas especies de enemigos naturales silvestres indicaron que compartían presas similares, pero que explotaban distintos recursos vegetales (diferentes valores de δ 13 C).
