Abstract

Abstract: A new multiscale observation method was developed to interpret the initiation and evolution of localized strain in sandstones. The method can observe surficial strain field and internal damage fracturing simultaneously and is combined with acoustic emission, ultrasound and digital image correlation. In the macroscale, the linear variable displacement transducer and camera data are used to observe the changes in strain localization; in the mesoscale, the evolution of the internal damage is determined by the acoustic emission polarity, b value, and P -wave velocity changes. Quantitative calculations and analysis of rock localization from the macro- and mesoscale are achieved for the strain localization process of a complete rock sample. The experiments show that the localization of sandstone can be divided into two stages. The first stage starts at the stable development of cracks, which are generated in the center of the rock sample and develop toward the edge of the sample. At the same time, sandstone strength greatly influences the localization band. The lower sandstone strengths lead to a more vertical orientation of the localization band.
