- Abstract: The fluctuation in tow tension is critical for Automated Fiber Placement (AFP). However, it has not been widely studied. In this paper, a tension variation equation was developed to represent the tension fluctuation during AFP, and experiments were used to demonstrate the validity of the equation. According to the equation, the degree of bending rigidity, power-law friction, and extensibility influence on the tension change was obtained. Additionally, the effects of bending rigidity and extensibility can be disregarded during AFP. Moreover, automatic wire feeding and laying trials were carried out separately, and proper tensions ( T = 3 N) for wire feeding and layup under experimental conditions were obtained. Therefore, the equation provides theoretical support for the structural and parameter optimization of the AFP.
