- Abstract : Separating sugar cane leaves and stalks is a crucial component in the sugarcane production process. In this article sugarcane leaf-stalk separation technology currently being used in commercial sugarcane production is reviewed. Two harvesting modes (whole-stalk harvesting and chopper harvesting) and three harvesting methods (combined whole-stalk harvesting, stepwise whole-stalk leaf-stripping, and combined chopper harvesting) are described, including a brief discussion of their advantages, limitations, and technical challenges. This is followed by a comprehensive review of two core physical properties of sugarcane: leaf-stalk binding force and suspension speed of sugarcane materials. The principles, process and equipment, critical components, and evaluation indexes of sugarcane leaf-stalk separating technologies are reviewed. The application, problems, and solution strategies of forward-stripping and reverse-stripping for whole-stalk harvesting, airflow fields for chopper harvesting, and critical components for both harvesting modes are summarised. Finally, potential new technologies were recommended for improving the performance and adaptability of sugarcane leaf-stalk separating technologies.
