- Abstract: Orthopaedic implant related infections are one of the major problems in orthopedic surgery and a major causes of implant failure. Local drug delivery is the significant approach to solve this problem. Bioactive implant materials coupled with antibiotics are widely used for the treatment of osteomyelitis. Gentamicin sulfate (GS) is mostly developed as an antibiotic to prevent bone implant related infection, due to cheap, broad antibacterial spectrum of action, and good stability. In the present study, a series of Gentamicin sulfate loaded chitosan combine with aloe vera (CS/AV) on Ti alloy has been synthesized by using electrodeposition method. Drug loaded CS/AV composite revealed higher antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The loading of Gentamicin sulfate onto CS/AV nanoparticles does not considerably affect the bioactivity and cytocompatability. Consequently synthesized Gentamicin sulfate loaded CS/AV composite can be potential candidates for the treatment of osteomyelitis.
