- Abstract : The focus of research in automobile engineering is shifted towards the reduction of emissions and enhance in fuel economy of automobiles. Employing magnetic field to fuel line carrying hydrocarbon (HC) fuel to engine achieves both the objectives. Application of magnetic field de-clusters the HC molecules giving more access to oxygen molecules, thus increasing HC participation in combustion. This work discusses the effect of magnetic field (5 magnets each of 3000 Gauss) on engine performance and exhaust emissions when applied on fuel line at various locations of single cylinder four-stroke petrol engine. The present sets of experiments conclude about improvement in fuel efficiency and reduction in harmful exhaust emissions with increased strength of magnetic field. The fuel economy is increased by a maximum of 9.36%. Exhaust gas constituents (carbon monoxide (CO), HC) are reduced by 12% and 72.84% respectively, while carbon dioxide (CO2 ) percentage is increased by 23.79%.
