Abstract

Abstract: Usage of Ankara in the twenty-first century south-western Nigeria is dynamic with continual paradigm shifts. But despite its ephemeral nature and the lack of organized museum preservation for the fabric, there has not been scholarly attention to its typology and manners of usage in the fashion of south-western Nigeria. This paper therefore studied Ankara in fashion context of between 1964 and 2018 in south-western Nigeria with the aim of producing a generic typology of the fabrics and determining the trends of its usage. The study was descriptive while qualitative method was used to analyze the data. Samples of Ankara styles and archival images collected from sellers, users and key informants are typologically and stylistically appraised. The study provided typologies based on material and styles. Findings indicated Ankara is used singly or combined with other materials as dresses and fashion accessories, with regional color preferences, in fashion statements reflective of the user's social standing in trends that interestingly combined Nigerian with Western or Euro-American fashion elements.
