Abstract

Abstract : Research by Health Education England (HEE) shows preceptorship programmes for band 5s improves job satisfaction, confidence, recruitment, and retention. In addition to inspiring career development and helping staff feel valued. Preceptorship should go beyond the first year to ensure continued development and progression. The current structure of the Allied Health workforce at GOSH means that more band 6 staff are employed than band 5. This gave us opportunity to develop a band 6 programme to continue development after preceptorship. HEE and Capital AHP Frameworks were used as a basis for the preceptorship model. Listening events were held for band 5, 6 and AHP heads to find out what was working well at GOSH, what needed to be improved and help identify gaps in development. Staff from Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Orthoptics, Physiotherapy, Play Therapy, Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy and Radiography took part in the listening events. Results were coded and analysed using a thematic analysis. Themes emerged under the 4 pillars of practice – clinical skills, facilitation of learning, research, and leadership. Further working groups were organised to analyse each theme in more depth. The Council for Allied Health Professions Research (CAHPR), NHS leadership frameworks were embedded into the preceptorship and band 6 development teaching curriculum to ensure quality. The AHPs Deliver Strategy (2022) was used to ensure the development programme was up to date with current AHP priorities, including diversity and inclusion, a greener NHS and health inequalities. Pilot programmes will be launched in September 2022 and will be facilitated by a wide range of professionals from GOSH. These courses will be evaluated and continuously improved to provide high-quality education.
