- ABSTRACT: The state of Bihar in India, if it were an independent country, would have been the 12th most populous country in the world with a population of 119 million. It ranks at the bottom of the list of Indian states on the Human Development Index. Bihar state has 38 districts. The corresponding author worked in Supaul district between 2011 and 2013 in polio eradication. The inadequacy of the healthcare infrastructure was glaring. None of the 200 Community Health Centres (CHC) in Bihar meets the guidelines of the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). Supaul district had a population of 2 229 076 as of the 2011 census.1 About 95.26% of the population resides in rural areas.1 Therefore, the rural population of Supaul as per the 2011 census would be 2 123 518.
