Abstract

Abstract: Phytochemical investigation of the roots of Croton crassifolius led to the isolation of eleven compounds including five terpenoids (1–3, 8 and 9), one coumarin (4), two hydroxycinnamic acids (5 and 6), one macrolide (7), and two stigmastane steroids (10 and 11). All the compounds were isolated from C. crassifolius for the first time. The structures of these compounds were determined by interpretation of their NMR spectroscopic data and comparison with reported ones in the literature. The chemophenetic significance of the isolated compounds was discussed. Highlights: The eleven isolated compounds are reported from the roots of Croton crassifolius for the first time. Five compounds (2, 6–9) are reported from the Euphorbiaceae for the first time. The chemophenetic significance of the isolates is discussed.
