Abstract

Abstract: A novel robust adaptive fuzzy variable fractional-order sliding mode control (FVFOSMC) strategy is proposed to suppress earthquake-induced vibrations on uncertain building structures. Firstly, a new variable fractional-order sliding mode controller (VFOSMC) is established by embedding the concepts of variable fractional-order (VFO) calculus into a sliding mode controller. Then, the FVFOSMC is designed by using VFO fuzzy logic with online adaptive approximation to avoid chattering or inaccurate switching. The global stability of the closed-loop system is proved based on VFO Lyapunov stability theory. Three examples illustrate the performance of the proposed FVFOSMC. The results confirm the robustness and superior performance of the new method in the presence of uncertain structure parameters and external unknown earthquake excitation. Highlights: A novel FVFOSMC strategy for vibration control of uncertain building structures is proposed. The proposed method can improve the energy efficiency of the control law. The approach allows the system to adaptively respond to excitation and uncertainties.
