Abstract

Abstract : Centre for outcomes and experience research in Child Health, Illness and Disability, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children Clinical research is improving clinical care for patient and families through innovation in healthcare. Historically, principal investigators have usually been medical professionals, but other health professionals can equally take on these roles to develop and lead clinically impactful research. Several grant funding bodies now recognise the importance of a well-trained clinical research workforce, with funding streams explicitly designed to improve the research capacity and capability of the Allied Health Professional (AHP) and Nursing workforce. NIHR fellowships for example, are leading on AHP clinical academic development and progression to become independent researchers. However, there are significant challenges to developing these roles including suitable funding streams, dedicated time for grant development, suitable supervisory and institutional support/mentorship, and overcoming imposter syndrome amongst others. This presentation will focus on the barriers & facilitators for AHP's & nurses to lead high level clinical research for patient benefit, highlighting the advantages for health care delivery. Research active AHPs should aspire to develop new academic/research skills, encouraging education both personally and as a wider profession, career progression towards independent researcher status, and innovative practice leading to patient and family benefits.
