- Abstract: Bone regeneration is an upcoming and promising field in orthopaedics and tissue engineering. Conventional treatment approaches for bone repair often cause infection, inflammation, and pain. Using scaffolds in bone repair is an ideal strategy to overcome all these issues caused by standard treatment measures. The synergic collaboration of biomaterials, cells, and signalling factors has paved the way for developing scaffolds that help to regenerate the bone and restore its functions. Biomaterial-based hydrogel with controllable mechanical properties and biocompatibility is utilized as a carrier for cells and growth factors, supporting bone regeneration. Recent studies reported using various biomaterials as a substitute of autograft for bone regeneration showed better osteoblast differentiation and osteoclastic resorption because of their versatile physicochemical properties. This review focussed on the fabrication of scaffolds, describing various properties and applications of biomaterials. The role of stem cells, growth factors and signalling molecules in bone tissue regeneration are also discussed Graphical Abstract: ga1
