- Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has changed the standard of care for patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke. The window of treatment has significantly increased the number of patients who would benefit from intervention. The presence of neurological co morbidities has yet to be studied and how this affects clinical outcomes may factor into expectations for care team and for the patients and their families. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database was queried for the most recent 5-year periodavailable (2012-2016). We identified patients with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke and the followingneurological disorders: Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson Disease (PD), Amyotrophic LateralSclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Variables analyzed includedmechanical thrombectomy, discharge home, length of hospital stay (LOS), and inpatient mortality. RESULTS: 460, 070 patients with AIS were identified and included in this study. MT was performed less often when the patient had another neurological diagnosis compared to those without neurological disease ( P < . 0001). However, patients with AIS whom have underlying neurological disorders such as AD, PD, and MS, have shown similar outcomes after MT to those who do not have these disorders. CONCLUSION: The presence of certain neurological disorders should not pose a contraindication to performing MT in patients with AIS.
