- Abstract: A sequence of Zr-Al-N thin films with differed content of Al were placed using RF/DC magnetron sputtering .This experiment focuses on considering the mechanical and tribological properties of the Zr-Al-N films by differing the attention of Aluminium .The purpose of this study is to decrease the friction and to rise the efficiency, lifespan of the material. The characterization techniques that are used to yield mechanical and tribological properties are x-ray diffraction (XRD) used for level identification of crystalline material, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) yields images of a trial by scanning the surface, Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis(EDX) used to find the essential composition of the coated material, profilometer measures the thickness and surface roughness of the coating, nano-indentation investigates the hardness, elasticity, plasticity index of the material, tribometer measures coefficient of friction, friction force, wear between the surfaces. The thickness obtained is from 0.8 µm to 1.65 µm. The wear rate cannot be calculated due to the wear track resulted in unusual shape but we can say that excellent wear resistance is attained where the Al concentration 21.27 at. %. Hardness and modulus value reduced by increasing the Al content further.
