- Abstract: In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructural analysis of SS316L with Nd:YAG and TIG welded specimen was compared. Here the weld joint was performed for a 2 mm plate with minimum power of 2KW employed in a single pass in laser and TIG welding. The welded specimen are compared for its mechanical properties like micro hardness and tensile strength. The microstructural studies revels the better weld and the fractrography studies conducted on tensile specimen through SEM. Also the micro hardness of the heat affected zone (HAZ) will be analyze to deduce the quality of the weld and to see the difference of strength of the parent material and the weld. The results shows that there is a drastic change in hardens in laser welded specimen, the TIG welding shows increase in hardness. The strength is more in the TIG welded specimen compared with the laser specimen, due to which the specimen is brittle in nature. As austenitic stainless steel are very corrosion resistant we can find a great use of them in various marine application.
