- Abstract: It is important to optimize air gun source design when exploring resources in the Bohai Sea. To date, the majority of related research has focused on the optimal design of array combinations, while research on sources and towed-streamer sinking depths is very limited. In this work, air gun wavelet numerical models were established based on nonideal gas conditions. Then, the wavelet morphologies and spectral characteristics of a single air gun were studied according to the sound wave propagation path under shallow sea conditions. A method for evaluating source performance using wavelets considering the towed-streamer ghost wave was proposed. Finally, 64 simulation experiments considering source and towed-streamer sinking depths were carried out, focusing on analyzing the wavelet and its spectral characteristics under different working conditions. The simulation results verify the reliability of the proposed method and show that this work has important guiding significance for the optimal design and quality evaluation of air gun sources in the Bohai Sea. Highlights: Different shapes and spectral characteristics of air gun wavelets in the Bohai Sea were studied. A method for evaluating air gun source wavelets performance considering towed-streamer ghost was innovatively proposed. The effects of source and towed-streamer sinking depth on the wavelet performance of the air gun source were analyzed.
