- Abstract : We used highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon (NC), with a fine pore network that provides efficient access for mass transport, as a catalyst support for Pt nanoparticles. This system was used to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The NC-supported Pt nanoparticles were monodisperse and had a lower average size, and a narrower size distribution, than Pt supported on carbon black (CB). The resultant Pt/NC exhibited improved activity for the ORR compared to Pt/CB. The improved ORR activity could have resulted from the optimized dispersion and size distribution of the Pt nanoparticles on NC.
