- Abstract: The current state of the art shows that the friction behavior during machining is not yet sufficiently understood and that there is still a need for further research. This represents a major obstacle to the successful further development of friction models for chip formation simulations. Therefore, a novel method for the analysis of friction mechanisms in machining via high-speed chip formation recordings is presented in this study. Within the frame of the investigations, a significant influence of the sliding velocity of the chip on the coefficient of friction could be determined over a wide range of different coating properties and cutting velocities.
