- Abstract: Spatial grid structures are the preferred choice in long-span civil and industrial buildings. As the intersections of multiple bars, only when they possess the characteristics of high load-carrying capacity, lightweight and convenient alignment, can the development needs of modern architecture be satisfied. Concentrating on single- and double-layer grid structures, this paper presents a novel joint—the hollow spherical shell plus bolt joint, whose finite element model is established to analyze its failure mechanism under uniaxial compression. It is concluded that the failure such joint undergoes under uniaxial compression is an annular elasto-plastic buckling failure of plastic hinges along the thickness of spherical shells.
