- Abstract : This study will present an overview of recent AEMs developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Various structures of polymer backbones including styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS), and poly(biphenyl alkylene), and poly (terphenyl alkylene) and different quaternary ammonium head groups were developed based on rational design of molecular engineering approach and their alkaline stability and hydroxide ion conductivity were investigated for above 80 °C AEM applications. A systematic study of relationships between polymer structure and AEM property such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, hydration number, OH - conductivity, and fuel cell performance was conducted and their results will be discussed.
