- Abstract: Packaging materials and techniques for dairy products and liquid milk kept evolving with the advancements in materials engineering and technologies along with the user aspirations and behavior. This paper presents a general overview about the various approaches leading to sustainable packaging of dairy products. A brief description about the novel dairy packaging systems and technologies that are used for packaging of dairy products are also included. Active packaging of dairy products helps to reduce material permeability which in turn extends their shelf life. Active packaging techniques relevant to dairy products make use of carbon dioxide absorbers, moisture/flavor/odor absorbers, releasing compounds, oxygen scavengers or by maintaining temperature control and antimicrobial packaging. Antimicrobial packaging gains interest due to their ability to deliver quality and safe food products. Biodegradable packaging answers the ecological viewpoint while the durability of low waste materials has a correlation with product shelf life which needs to be addressed.
