- Abstract: Depending upon the type of external stimuli, 'Chromogenic' materials are generally classified as photochromic, thermochromic, electrochromic and gasochromic materials where the external stimuli are light (photon), temperature, applied electric field and gaseous atmosphere (for e.g., H2 gas), respectively. Among other analogues, thermochromic materials are part of larger class of 'Intelligent' or 'Smart' materials. These materials change their color upon heating. More generally speaking, their functional properties change with temperature. Vanadium oxides belong to this group of smart, thermochromic material. The thermodynamically stable variant of vanadium oxide, V2 O5 is chosen in current study. The band gap of V2 O5 synthesized by wet-chemical process, was observed to show dependence on the post heating temperature. This study suggest a possibility of band gap tuning by simple heat treatment.
