- Highlights: A new approach is developed for the topology optimization of ribbed slabs and shells. This approach can be easily integrated into both SIMP and BESO frameworks. Compared with conventional ones, the new approach can produce designs with higher performance. The optimized results obtained from this approach have no isolated ribs. Abstract: Ribbed slabs are widely used in the building industry. Designing ribbed slabs through conventional engineering techniques leads to limited structural forms, low structural performance and high material waste. Topology optimization is a powerful tool for generating free-form and highly efficient structures. In this research, we develop a mapping constraint optimization approach to designing ribbed slabs and shells. Compared with conventional ones, the presented approach is able to produce designs with higher performance and without isolated ribs. The approach is integrated into three optimization methods and used to design both flat slabs and curved shells. Several numerical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new approach. The findings of this study have potential applications in the design of aesthetically pleasing and structurally efficient ribbed slabs and shells.
