- The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused more than 70 million infections and approximately 1.6 million deaths worldwide [1]. However, the pathological changes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) airways remain unclear due to limited accessibility of autopsy or biopsy. Severe COVID-19 patient airways plugged by MUC5AC-containing mucus exhibit hyperplasia of goblet cells, and hypoplasia of multiciliated cells and club cells, as well as significantly reduced CC16 and MUC5B levels, and increased IL-13 levels https://bit.ly/2M2NcdO
