- Abstract: A fluorescent supramolecular aggregate 1 that self-assembled from pillar [5]arene-based Cu(II) coordination complexes was synthesized. The supramolecular aggregate 1 was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV–vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The supramolecular aggregate 1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity to nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) and metal ions. Among the various NACs and metal ions, the emission of 1 was exclusively and significantly quenched by the addition of p -nitrophenol (PNP) and Fe 3+, exhibiting a low limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.39 μM and 4.9 μM, respectively. The possible mechanisms of fluorescence quenching were discussed in detail. Furthermore, the method could be applied to detect the PNP and Fe 3+ in lake water. Graphical abstract: Image 1 Highlights: A fluorescent supramolecular aggregate 1 was synthesized by a solvothermal method. 1 showed high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of PNP and Fe 3+ . The LOD for PNP and Fe 3+ were 0.39 μM and 4.9 μM, respectively. 1 shows good potential as a fluorescent probe for environment pollutants' detection.
