- Abstract:
- Abstract : Cover : Unlike cardiac myocytes that display a rod‐like shape and an organized intracellular structure, cardiomyocytes derived from human pluripotent stem cells (iPSC‐CMs) exhibit an altered morphology and a disorganized intracellular structure, features that reflect their immaturity. These features further affect cellular functions and make the iPSC‐CMs unsuitable for research in the lab. In this issue, Jimenez‐Vazquez et al ., describe a micropatterning technique that can be implemented to produce silicone membrane microstructures with similar stiffness to the native cardiac matrix. These membranes can be used as a cell culture substrate to promote cellular alignment. iPSC‐CMs cultured on these micropatterned membranes demonstrate an in‐vivo‐like‐rod‐shaped morphology, contractile function, calcium handling, and electrophysiology. The cover image demonstrates a single micropatterned iPSC‐CMs stained for troponin I (red) and filamentous actin (green). Nuclei are stained with DAPI (blue).
