Abstract

Abstract: Introduction: Additional antenatal counselling of KMC and NNS improves breastmilk feeding in preterm infants however needs implementation. Methods: This RCT was conducted in a level III hospital (6 months) to evaluate the effect of antenatal counseling of KMC and NNS on exclusive human milk feeding and growth in preterm infants (intervention group). Outcomes were proportion of neonates discharged on breast feeding + spoon feeding and weight gain. Results: In intervention group 53% (35 of 66) were discharged on breast feeding + spoon feeding as compared to 5% (3 of 63) in routine group (p=<0.001). In intervention group, 47% (31 of 66) were discharged on spoon feeding only as compared to 95% (60 of 63) in control group (p=<0.001). Mean weight gain was similar in both groups. Conclusion: Additional antenatal counseling on KMC and NNS improved breastmilk feeding, KMC and NNS rates during hospital stay and at discharge. Highlights: What is already known? ➢ Routine postnatal counselling of mothers and families improves BF rates ➢ Additional kangaroo mother care (KMC) and non-nutritive sucking (NNS) postnatally improve breastfeeding rates. What this study adds? Individualized additional antenatal counseling on additional Kangaroo mother care and Non Nutritive Sucking to mothers initiated during antenatal period and continuing postnatally improves breastmilk feeding and growth in preterm neonates.
