- Abstract: The unsustainable nature of fossil fuels, as well as their environmental impact, has turned attention to alternative energy sources such as fuel cells. The microbial fuel cell concept has fascinated the scientific community in recent years because of its capability to convert organic waste directly into power via microbially catalysed anodic and abiotic cathodic processes. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an eco-friendly technique to generate electricity while simultaneously treating wastewater. Different aspects of MFCs, including the anode, cathode, and membrane, have been reviewed in this article of last 10 years, and some practical methods for overcoming the practical obstacles in this sector have been offered. In addition, this research review highlights the advancement of MFCs, as well as a summary of their benefits and potential uses in the future.
