Abstract

Background: Psychotherapy can be an important part of psychosocial occupational therapy practice; however, it requires specialized training to achieve and maintain competence. Regulation varies by province, and in Ontario, occupational therapists were recently authorized to perform psychotherapy. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the psychotherapy practice, training, and support needs of Ontario occupational therapists. Method: An online survey was sent to occupational therapists who had clients with mental health or chronic pain issues, asking about their expertise and support needs in relation to nine psychotherapy approaches. Findings: Of the 331 therapists who responded, there were variations in the nature and frequency of psychotherapy practice. Experienced therapists in outpatient settings were more likely to practice psychotherapy, and cognitive-behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness were the most common approaches. Supervision and training varied, with many therapists interested in occupational therapy–specific training. Implications: Recommendations for a framework of support include education about the nature of psychotherapy, training and supervision guidelines, and advocacy for occupational therapy and psychotherapy. Description: La psychothérapie peut représenter une grande part de la pratique psychosociale en ergothérapie; toutefois, il est essentiel de suivre une formation spécialisée pour acquérir et tenir à jour ses compétences dans ce domaine. La réglementation de ce domaine varie d'une province à l'autre et, en Ontario, les ergothérapeutes ont récemment été autorisés à exercer la psychothérapie. But: Explorer la pratique et la formation en psychothérapie, de même que le soutien requis par les ergothérapeutes de l'Ontario souhaitant utiliser cette approche. Méthodologie: Un sondage en ligne a été envoyé aux ergothérapeutes traitant des clients ayant des problèmes de santé mentale ou de douleur chronique, pour leur demander de décrire leur expertise et le soutien dont ils avaient besoin, en fonction de neuf approches en psychothérapie. Résultats: Parmi les 331 ergothérapeutes ayant répondu au sondage, on a observé une variation dans la nature et la fréquence de la pratique de la psychothérapie. Les ergothérapeutes ayant de l'expérience dans les milieux offrant des consultations externes aux patients non hospitalisés étaient plus susceptibles d'utiliser la psychothérapie; dans ces cas, la thérapie cognitive du comportement, la technique d'entrevue motivationnelle et la thérapie de la pleine conscience étaient les approches les plus courantes. Le degré de supervision et de formation variait d'un répondant à l'autre, et de nombreux ergothérapeutes ont indiqué qu'ils étaient intéressés à suivre une formation spécifique en ergothérapie. Conséquences: Parmi les recommandations visant à élaborer un cadre d'appui, citons les suivantes : offrir une formation sur la nature de la psychothérapie, élaborer des directives en matière de formation et de supervision et promouvoir l'ergothérapie et la psychothérapie.
