- Abstract: Invited for this issue's Front Cover is the Research group of Prof. Riccardo Ruffo from University of Milano Bicocca (Italy). The cover picture shows schematically the synthesis of the MXene 2D material (on the right) using acidic solutions starting from the lamellar 3D MAX phase (on the left) avoiding the direct use of HF to improve the sustainability of the MXenes production. Abstract : "The MXenes are emerging in many technological fields, among which one of the most appealing is their use as anode materials in rechargeable batteries. One of the biggest challenges is the production of such materials as it involves the direct use of HF. In this study, we review the HF‐free synthesis reported in the literature and propose a new method. We demonstrate the possibility to produce MXenes exploiting HBF4 as an etching agent, improving the sustainability of the MXene production while obtaining the desired structural and functional features. The product obtained with this approach is comparable to the MXene prepared with the classical route (5 % HF) in terms of compositions, structure, morphology, and overcomes its performance when tested as anode materials for sodium ion batteries…" Learn more about the story behind the research featured on the front cover in this issue's Cover Profile.
