- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Undercut was inhibited during high-speed welding employing plate inclination. The molten pool was shortened due to weakened melt flow with plate inclination. Droplets shifted from inward to outward of the molten pool with angle increasing. The transversal spreading of the melt was promoted by reduced backward flow rate. Pressure model considering the position of transition line was established. Abstract: Plate inclination was employed to inhibit the undercut defect during high-speed metal active-gas arc welding (MAG), the dynamic behavior of the molten pool and droplets were observed, and the undercut defect was emphatically analyzed. The results showed that the droplets tended to move reverse to the welding direction and fell into the tail of the gouging region with the plate inclination angle below 10°, while moved along the welding direction and fell out of the gouging region with the angle above 30°. The undercut can be inhibited employing plate inclination with angle of 30°, which was closely related to the flow of the molten metal. Finally, a pressure balance model at the transition line considering fluid interface pressure, hydrostatic pressure and arc pressure was established, and the inhibition mechanisms of undercut defect were discussed basing on the flow state of the molten metal.
