- Abstract: While treatment of acute traumatic brain injury is frequently focused on ensuring blood flow to the brain to avoid secondary injury, there are limited tools for measuring cerebral flow on a continuous basis in critical care settings. This paper describes the use of an intracranial pressure catheter having an added piezoelectric polymer sensing element to detect detailed cardiac pressure waveforms of the cerebral arteries. The augmented catheter is tested on swine test subjects undergoing vasopressor and hemorrhage-resuscitation maneuvers that manipulate intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow. A low-order, linear hemodynamics and intracranial pressure model is developed to partially capture waveform propagation from central arterial blood pressure to the piezoelectric sensor. after minimizing model error with respect to a select number of time-varying parameters, the system is able to track changes in blood flow as measured by a reference trans-cranial Doppler ultrasound.
