Abstract

Highlights: Closed institutions form specific atmospheres, which can be described as institutional atmospheres. The atmosphere in occupational safety is related to the social relationships and the trust between the staff members. An atmosphere of insecurity may be sensed by the staff members as a vague feeling that something is going on. The staff members use their professional skills to interpret the verbal and non-verbal hints that indicate an altered atmosphere. The institutional atmosphere is engineered to denote care, confine and correct through control and aims to signify safety and security, but it is re-formed by staff members.
