- Abstract: A tripodal pentadentate mono‐imine derivative, 2‐({2‐[bis‐(2‐amino‐ethyl)‐amino]‐ethylimino}‐methyl)‐phenol (L2) is employed for 'turn on' fluorescence recognition of Zn 2+ and Al 3+ at two different wavelengths. Chelation‐enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) assisted inhibition of excited‐state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is proposed as the sensing mechanism. The 1 HNMR, mass, IR spectral data, Jobs experiment and single crystal X‐ray structure of the [Ni(II)‐L2] complex (N1) strongly support the structure of L2 and its interaction with Zn 2+ and Al 3+ . Density functional theoretical (DFT) studies indicate higher stability of the Zn 2+ and Al 3+ adducts over free L2. The recognition of Zn 2+ and Al 3+ at two different emission wavelengths allows to construct a binary logic gate. Moreover, L2 is useful for determination unknown concentration of Al 3+ in real water samples. The complex N1 catalyses the catechol oxidation reaction. Abstract : A tris‐(2‐aminoethyl) amine derived mono‐imine derivative (L2) functions as dual responsive fluorescence probe for Zn 2+ and Al 3+ at two different wavelengths in aqueous ethanol. Job's plot, ESI‐MS and 1 H NMR studies support the L2‐ cation interaction. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis of the Ni(II) complex of L2 (N1) confirms the structure of L2. The N1 shows catecholase like activity. The ability of L2 to detect both Zn 2+ and Al 3+ is exploited for construction of binary logic gate.
